If your main source of income comes from cutting hair all-day, knowing how to take care of your tools should be a top priority.
We want your experience with your scissors to be a joy. Perfectly working scissors will make such a difference to your day and your craft.
Maintaining your scissors in between services is essential... think of it this way... when a client leaves your salon with an amazing hair-do, they will continue to wash, dry and brush their hair before their next visit. Your scissors will also expect some TLC before their next service.
Here is how to care for your scissors in between professional servicing.
Allow a few days for new edges to bed and wear into each other. Avoid cutting heavy sections or using strong thumb pressure cutting as the new edges can be easily damaged.
PLEASE BE AWARE - Your scissors will be sharp, sharp, sharp, so please take time to become accustomed to your newly serviced scissors to avoid cutting fingers!
Personal hygiene for your scissors. We strongly suggest sanitising your scissors with (water-free) H42 Virucidal Anti-Bacterial on a regular basis (available through Perth Scissor Sharpening). Let them sit for 10 minutes.
Wipe clean with tissue or a soft cloth. Do not leave scissors dirty or wet overnight as they will rust and corrode!
Constantly inspect your scissors by opening and closing blades slowly... are they catching or stiff, you may have rust or tension may need adjusting. Can you see a reflection of light along the blade edge... dull spots may mean a knick along the blade. Check for loose finger inserts or stoppers. If your stopper falls out, cease using them immediately as it may cause damage to your blades.
Oil your scissors 2-3 x per day and at the end of the day (after cleaning them) or if you're storing them for extended periods of time.
Fully open scissors and apply a small drop of oil to the inside of the blades and the balance faces, which are located just behind the centre screw. Spread the oil evenly along the blades with a tissue and remove any excess oil.
We recommend Indigo Scented Scissor Oil (available exclusively through Perth Scissor Sharpening and FREE with every new scissor purchase), not only does our unique scent act as an indicator that your scissors are oiled, but also offers your client a pleasant experience whilst cutting their hair.
It is normal for the tension to loosen in the first few days as the new washers we install in the centre screw assembly wear in. They must be kept correctly adjusted or you run the risk of damaging your new sharp edges and voiding your warranty.
Steps
1: Hold the scissor by the thumb loop handle vertically with the tips pointing up in the closed position (keep in this position steps 1 to 3).
2: With the other hand open the other handle so the scissor blade is about 90 degrees forming an X.
3: Release the extended blade to drop freely. The blades should close and stop halfway or about 45 degrees.
4: TOO LOOSE (hair is grabbing, folding or bending) - the blades will close quickly, sharply or heavily to a closed position.
5: TOO TIGHT - the blades will not move at all when you release it or moves ever so slightly.
If adjustment is required, turn the centre scissor dial/screw either with your fingers or special tool (depending on model) - lefty loosey, righty tighty! Only make small increment adjustments and continue to follow steps 1-3 to check.
Please note: Tension adjustment is NOT a personal preference. Scissors must be adjusted correctly or your warranty may be void
With your tension set correctly, balanced right - you won't need to put sideways pressure on your thumb to make the scissor cut, which can result in health issues such as carpal tunnel syndrome and RSI over time. Along with excessive wear on the scissor resulting in a shorter life span.
Recheck tension consistently throughout the day! As scissors are made of metal and can react to temperature change, which affects performance and feel. Make sure tips are closing correctly and not crossing over.
Store in a scissor case and don't let them bang loosely in your trolly drawer. Plastic dividers are strongly recommended - 1 scissor per divider. Always store scissors in the closed position while in storage.
Warranty - We guarantee 100% satisfaction. In the unlikely event something is not to your satisfaction we will repair, rework or replace within 7-14 days subject to inspection and our discretion.
Please be aware that the following may void your guarantee:-
* Attempts at repairing/sharpening by other than a Perth Scissor Sharpening bladesmith.
* Incorrect maintenance such as lack of correct oiling, storage or incorrect tensioning.
* Incorrect use such as cutting materials other than hair, drops and accidents.
